UnWrapping Christmas with Philmont’s Scott Taube

Philmont has initiative…and I like that in a band.  After leaving Forefront Records, the band decided to do things their own way—by using Kickstarter to complete their independent recording, The Transition EP, which was released this Fall.  Scott Taube, frontman for the pop-punk band, took the time to UnWrap Christmas with Backseat Writer.  By the way, you can also head over to iLike.com to download a free copy of the band’s Christmas song, “It Never Snows (in Charlotte).”

Did you score any good deals on Black Friday?  Is it a day of great deals or terrifying chaos?

My vote goes for “terrifying chaos!” I’m not a big fan of crowds in general. If I go to a rock show, I typically try to weasel my way to the side stage or monitor board for this same reason. I can, however, appreciate a good deal- me and the guys always hit up sales racks and discount stores like Marshalls and Ross. So I guess if you can contend with the crowds- the more power to ya, but it’s not something that’ll be dragging me out of bed at 5am!

Where are you spending Christmas this year…and what are you looking most forward to?

I’m a married man, so my Christmas will be divided between my parents’ house in Charlotte, NC and my wife’s parents in Atlanta, GA. It’s always nice to see family. When I was a kid I used to visit my grandparents in Michigan and Wisconsin. Fun fact- my family has never celebrated Christmas on Dec 25th- we always celebrate early and then travel!

What was the best Christmas gift you ever received? (Don’t say “Jesus” because that’s a given!)

When I was a wee little tot my older brother and I got walkie-talkies for Christmas. We were stoked! My mom called them “walkie-yellies” because we would stand in two separate rooms of the house and pretty much scream into the toys.

Describe one of the most hilarious Christmases.

As I mentioned, my family always traveled during Christmas. One Christmas evening we were driving from  Michigan to Wisconsin when a cop pulled my dad over for speeding. The cop didn’t give us a ticket because, for one, it was Christmas Day, but also because my dad had decorated the roof rack of the mini van with Christmas lights. I guess the cop appreciated his Christmas cheer.

What’s your fave Christmas song/Christmas movie or cartoon/Christmas cookie?

I LOVE the movie A Christmas Story. Sure it’s older, but it always puts me in the Christmas mood. Maybe because it’s always snowing in the movie, and I never see any of the white stuff living in the south.

New Year’s resolution—yes or no? If yes, what is your resolution?

My resolution is to read more. I had the same resolution last year and did manage to read about 5 or 6 books. I’d like to double that this year.
