UnWrapping Christmas with Poema

Sisters Shealeen and Elle of Poema are back and UnWrapping Christmas with Backseat Writer.  Oh, how I love their most recent release, a Christmas EP called Once a Year (read review).  A big thanks to Poema for telling us more about their excellent album and sharing a little Christmas cheer!

Did you score any good deals on Black Friday? Is it a day of great deals or terrifying chaos?

Yes! Saved $150 on equipment at a music store! To us, that’s a HUGE score! Elle actually stood in line for a few hours, so worth it though!

This year you released a Christmas EP. Tell me about one of the original songs on the album.

There are two originals (“Wool Coats” and “More and More”) and three covers (“Drummer Boy”, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and a cover by a country artist, Mindy Smith called “Santa Will Find You”).  “Wool Coats” is basically about everything we love about winter/Christmas. We just released a really cute, fun music video we made for it! “More and More” is about how important love is at Christmas time, about how much better it is to spend the holidays with people you love than to get a bunch of stuff.

Where are you spending Christmas this year…and what are you looking most forward to?

We’ll be home for Christmas 🙂 We’re excited to spend our first Christmas in our new house!

What was the best Christmas gift you ever received? (Don’t say “Jesus” because that’s a given!)

For Elle, it was her first guitar. Our dad got her a big baby Taylor guitar and that was the guitar she learned on!

For Shealeen, it was a fully restored Steinway grand piano! Sort of a family thing but definitely with Shealeen in mind, cause she’s the only one who really plays it

What’s your fave Christmas song/Christmas movie or cartoon/Christmas cookie?

Oh boy, big question. Ok here goes: “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on An Open Fire).”  Love watching It’s A Wonderful Life every year! (You can probably tell if you listen to the lyrics in “Wool Coats”) and we grew up watching “The Grinch” every Christmas. Both the cartoon and the real life version.  And definitely biscochitos, the New Mexico state cookie! They’re soooooo good.

New Year’s resolution—yes or no? If yes, what is your resolution?

No matter if it’s the new years or the middle of summer, we always are striving to better ourselves – in every way! As long as by this time next year, we have improved and are further then we were, then I would consider our resolution fulfilled
