After a while, all Christmas music starts to sound the same, which is why I’m so grateful for Dave Barnes’ album, Very Merry Christmas. It’s stylish, romantic, thoughtful, and most importantly, fun! I thought other albums were my favorite Christmas album of 2010, until I listened to Very Merry Christmas, which is now on permanent rotation for the holiday season.
Heavy on the piano, Barnes blends traditional, contemporary and original songs to make an album that is as complete and satisfying as a really tasty Christmas cookie. The album’s title track, “Very Merry Christmas,” talks about a couple visiting with a house full of family for the holidays. Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott lends her dazzling vocals to “Christmas Tonight,” which is sure to become a modern classic. But my favorite song is “Mary and Joseph,” a folksy retelling of the Gospel accounts ripe with acoustic guitar.
This album is perfect for a quiet evening cuddling with your beloved by the fire, as background music for that classy Christmas party, or even just as a break from the frenzy of the of the holiday season. In fact, skip the fruitcake, just buy everyone you know Dave Barnes’ Very Merry Christmas.
*Very Merry Christmas is available this month on Amazon.com as a $5 download. How cool is that?*
