By Amy Sondova Home For Christmas (Fervent), the latest release from BarlowGirl, makes me wish Christmas came more than once a year…at least if I could get albums like this. The sisters Barlow—Rebecca, Alyssa, and Lauren—record classics like “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and “O, Come, O Come Emmanuel,” as well as an original piece. With a hint of wonder, a lot of Christmas spirit, and overflowing with praise for God, Home For Christmas is a splendid holiday treat.
Creativity:: 6 out of 10 :: While the ladies perform each song exquisitely, and even chose to record the long-forgotten “Panis Angelicus,” this album offers Christmas classics.
Original Songs:: 9 out of 10:: “Hallelujah” (Light Has Come) is haunting in melody and awesome as it considers the wonder of Christ’s birth. Despite the other songs that have been written from Mary’s perspective, this song not only considers Mary’s thoughts but erupts into a chorus of praise.
Classic Covers:: 10 out of 10:: Wow! BarlowGirl’s vocals just get more impressive with each and every project. As such, they nail these songs. “Carol of the Bells/Sing We Now of Christmas” blew me away!
Musical Score:: 7 out of 10::The melodies, again, are traditional. However, even without experimentation, they are nicely done. The orchestration and background vocals keep with the pleasant spirit of the album. These girls know how to harmonize!
Overall Holly Jolliness:: 10 out of 10:: I’m a big fan of BarlowGirl, and I love this album! It will be inconstant rotation this holiday season. I find myself getting lost in the beauty of the vocals.
