The “Christian” Way to Vote

According to Florida pastor Brian Longworth (who I had never heard of until I read this article), if Christians show up to the polls and “vote their values” Mike Huckabee can win the Republican Party’s nomination. Here’s a direct quote from the piece, “Christians make up the largest voting block in America, and when they show up and vote their values, conservatives win. Longworth says that Mike Huckabee is the only conservative among the frontrunners. If Christians support Huckabee, Huckabee can carry Florida and win the Republican nomination.”

Besides the glaring assumptions that Longworth is making, let’s tackle the small ones first.

1. People who identify themselves as Christians do make up the largest voting block in American (about 70%), but not all people who identity themselves as Christians share the same values.

2. Since they may not all share the same values, they may not all be conservative, and therefore would not vote for a Republican candidate. Heck, they may not even be registered Republicans.

3. Even if registered as a Republican, they may share their values with another candidate like McCain, Romney, or Guiliani. Voting for values does not necessarily mean voting for Huckabee.

4. Florida can carry a Huckabee nomination. What are the rest of the states? Chopped liver? Our votes don’t matter?

Now let’s tackle the glaring statements, shall we?

False Assumption #1: If you’re a Christian, then you should have good conservative values, which automatically means a vote for Huckabee.

I am a Christ-follower. I like that terminology because so many people use the word “Christian” to mean all kinds of things. “Christ-follower” invites discussion about what I believe, and doesn’t necessarily merit assumptions. However, even as a Christ-follower, it is assumed that I am a middle-class white Republican conservative. I am not.

I am white.

I am middle-class (barely).

I am registered Republican (although I tried to change my vote to “Independent” but it was crazy paperwork).

I am not conservative; I’m a moderate.

And even though I am classified as all these things doesn’t mean I vote like a robot. I look at the issues, at the candidates, at what they say, how they act, and what they have done in the past. Regardless of gender, religion, race, class (even though they’re all rich), and beliefs, I look at the issues.

No one in any party fits each and every qualification in my choice for President. But to say that I should vote for Mike Huckabee because it’s the Christian thing to do? Whatever.

False Assumption #2: The only issue is that of abortion and overturning Roe V. Wade.

I am whole-heartedly pro-life and against abortion. However, I don’t think people who are pro-choice run around saying, “Hey, let’s kill unborn babies just to kill babies!” No one wants abortion, yet it is a sad choice that women can choose to make.

This is going to shock a lot of you, but at this point, I don’t think that Roe V. Wade should be over-turned. This is why–as long as we can still talk about abortion in the open, we can still offer women alternatives to abortion such as adoption, services for mothers, and post-abortion counseling and care. If abortion becomes illegal, the methods which are dangerous and harmful to women will become even more harmful because they would not be regulated by the government. A woman who had an illegal abortion will not receive treatment for her ailments, and in turn, woman and child will both die. For now, I believe that Roe V. Wade is decided law.

Yes, we need to continue to educate people about the dangers of abortion, but we also need to offer pregnant teens and women options about what to do with their baby once they are with child. Instead of spending money on protests, let’s donate to pregnancy centers that can help these women get prenatal care, parenting classes, and skills to find jobs. That is money much better spent. (FYI: I spent several years as a volunteer for an out shoot ministry of the American Life League. Some of these opinions have come as a result of shoving pro-life literature down people’s throats. If you want me to blog about that, let me know and I would be happy to share that story with you.)

Besides abortion, there are other important issues to consider such as health care, the war in Iraq (One Less Bomb, baby!), social security, education, the economy, and perhaps one of the biggest issues for me–more money for social services! When I vote my values, those are all things I consider.

As a registered Republican, here’s where I stand on my current choices:

Guiliani–no way. I just don’t like him.

Romney–undecided. He seems OK, but I’m just not sure.

Huckabee–leaning to dislike. Something about him rubs me the wrong way. I also don’t like people telling me to vote for him because he’s a Christian.

McCain–I’ve always liked the guy. He’s too gung-hu for the war, but I like his ability to work outside his party to get stuff done. I’m most favorable towards McCain at the moment.

As for the Democrats, I’m really digging on Barack Obama. If he becomes the Democrat nominee, I will definitely take a closer look at Obama and his politics. He had a good chance of winning my vote.

My response: I am a Christ-follower, and I will vote my values, which include more money for education, feeding the poor, housing the homeless, offering housing and care to pregnant women, money for social services to get people things they need, affordable health care for everyone, and a plan to get out of Iraq. It seems to me that Jesus instructed us to care for the poor, to fight for justice to those who have none, and to bind up the broken. These are my values, and I shall vote by them, for I feel they are from God.

Plus, if anyone adopts “One Less Bomb” as a platform, I’m totally into that.

  1. the blanket statement took me back to ted haggard saying the same thing in ‘jesus camp’.. funny, when i read the bible i don’t think.. “dang, Jesus is one hell of a conservative”.. now if huckabee starts hanging with the prostitutes and children he might be more like christ, or some sort of pedophile.. depends on the media spin. &:~D

  3. Amy, I totally agree. I am really like Barack the more I hear from him. And I don’t really like Huckabee all that much and I refuse to vote for him just because he is a Christian and a former pastor.

  5. Amy, OH MY WORD! This is SO completely what I have been thinking/feeling recently!!!! As a matter of fact, I looked up the stance different candidates have taken on abortion, and do you know that the only one I found with a track record for cutting abotion rates is HILARY???

I am glad that the candidates are not sticking right on the party lines anymore, as well… and that the Democratic candidates are talking about faith! Wooo!

  7. How can anyone stomach Hilary or Obama? How can you vote for people that trust in their false gods? How can we vote the next anti-christ in to office. Please don’t vote democrat! I am not ready to fight against the mark of the beast. I am not ready to pay 50% of my income into taxes. I am not a socialist. I am not a communist. I am not marxist. I am truly a Patriot. I am absolutely a Christian. I am a warrior. Vote for me next time. Matt Krueger for President. I’m only 33 years old so I have to wait one more term, then I am taking it to the masses. I am your voice. I will follow the Bible as it should be. That is what made this Country great. Now, it’s time to get back to the faith in biblical proportions. It’s time we fight for our religion. The only true religion! Christianity. All other gods are useless. The forefathers never intended us to separate Church from State. They simply allowed others their opinions without consequence. Now, my son askes me that if he goes to the public school will he be punished for praying to Jesus. How sad is that. Yet, I have heard reports of schools changing the story of the three little pigs to the three little puppies because the story of pigs is offensive to the false religion of Muslims. Too….F’n Bad. Your religion flew two planes into the World Trade Centers, one plane into the Pentagon and another Plane crashed when the Christians stood up to your pathedic attempts. I am not afraid to say that the muslims should be educated by the Christains so that they may be forgiven and educated. I would love to save those that are lost. We need to fight for their souls. Stand up and fight! If they can change a childrens story to meet their religious beliefs, we can pray in public and in school. Sorry to offend, but we are Christians and we are absolutely right in our beliefs! All other religions are fictional and fabricated by the weak.

    end of story!

  9. I am not tolerant of other religions. The fact of the matter is that Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins. We are forever in his debt. Anyone that slanders the One True God JESUS deserves punishment. May God have mercy on their souls. It’s time to stand up for your beliefs. It is time to stand up and fight for Jesus. He fought for us. I can’t stomach this political correct crap we are being spoon fed on a daily basis. We are Christains. Be proud. Stand up and fight. We can’t turn the other cheek when someone slams the one true God. We can’t roll over and take it. We need to be harsh. We need to be diligent. We need to be Christains. I know we are not the judge or the jury and can not judge the weak. However, we don’t need to be told where we can and can not pray. My 7 year old son asked me the other day why he would be punished if he prayed in the public school system. I told him that I would fight that tooth and nail if that ever happened.

Look, it was never the intention of our forefathers to punish you for freedom of religion. The seperation of church and state was a battle picked up by the weak minded fools that rejected Jesus as their saviors. Now, we are being spoon fed the difference between Christmas and X-mas. Santa Clause is a cartoon character that was drummed up by the unbelievers. Yet, here we are, being force fed with the idea that we need to be accepting of other peoples’ beliefs. That is a total and utterly fabricated ideal. If you’re Christain, you absolutely need to stand up and fight. I will not let my son hear about the three little puppies in order to appease the muslims. They are wrong. They are lost souls. They need education in Christianity. If they ignore the word of the True God, they will suffer the consequences.

Let your voices be known. Stand up and fight. We are right. We are the voices that will carry Jesus’s message to the masses. Don’t roll over and take it. I know the whole story. We will win. It says so in God’s word. It says so in the Bible.

Be strong! Don’t let the nonbelievers get away with any more souls.

  11. Just a quick question…
How in the world can you consider voting for Obama (as a Christian) when he will not even put his hands on the Bible? Enlighten me, please, Amy.

I swear that every vote for Hilary is a vote for Bill Clinton, too. How can we vote for someone who was stupid enough to stay with her husband after his little presidential scandal? I can understand how people can get the whole “things worked out” idea, but now we’re promoting her? She’s stupid for staying with Bill and if she took pity on him, what else will she take pity on as president?

I was really for my friend, Fred Thompson, but he just wasn’t trying hard. He had some good ideas. He just never let them get out there. My advice would be to think before you vote this year… please. Otherwise our president might be our worst enemy, for the next FOUR years.

  13. Matt and V, you guys are great…seriously.

Let me tackle V’s quick question first….”How in the world can you consider voting for Obama (as a Christian) when he will not even put his hands on the Bible?”

Obama says that he is a Christian, as do many of the other candidates (besides Romney, of course). Therefore, I have no reason to believe he is not a Christian. Perhaps he takes such a high view of Scripture that he refuses to pledge upon it. Just a thought.

I vote on the issues–what I believe are the issues with the brain that God has given me. I also pray and study Scripture to determine what is really important and who is going to get that done. Amazingly, even in the Bible, God used people who were not believers do to His work!

Also, V, I would question why your e-mail address has to do with horoscopes if you are such a strong believer in the Bible? Wouldn’t that fall under sorcery and divination, of which the Bible clearly speaks against?

Fred Thompson’s not even in the race anymore, so that’s a dead issue. Although Ann Coulter is a fan of his.

    Matt K.,

“My 7 year old son asked me the other day why he would be punished if he prayed in the public school system.”

I don’t know if you realize this, but students CAN pray in schools. Be sure to check out your students rights online. How can anyone really stop people from praying?

“How can you vote for people that trust in their false gods? How can we vote the next anti-christ in to office?”

Wow. The Anti-Christ? That’s pretty dramatic. You sound a little fanatical to me, sir. And you probably used use the F-Bomb in any context. It might turn off conservative voters.

  15. haha.

The email address is something I’ve used as a side account forever. Shh… the account is how I mess with my ex. We can’t all be perfect and revenge is too easy. XD

I like reading horoscopes often because they’re funny and its something I enjoy in my spare time, anyway. Reading my horoscope surely won’t send me to hell… I’d hope not.

Ohh and about the Fred Thompson thing, I really wish he would have stayed in… not that it would matter, but he gives Tennesseans a worse reputation. =/ My dad was actually close friends with Fred Thompson’s son and we had Fred 08 stickers on our cars and everything. It’s awful that people from small towns can’t run for president like people say.
